Situated in the heart of historical downtown New London, CT is The Jazz
Underground located at 33 Golden Street. What began in 2009 as a cozy little
jazz club has grown to become New England’s leading live jazz  venue. The
Jazz Underground is a name that denotes excellence. The Jazz Underground is
the name to know for  light fare, sophisticated cocktails, extravagant art work
and the best in live music. A variety of art works graces the stylish décor.
Owners Dan Hartman, Matt Spates and Bob Sylvester decided to open The Jazz
Underground after considering many other possible locations they decided
New London was a great fit. Dan Hartman played with his quintet at the jazz
club, Adagio, that existed at the same location a few years earlier. Bob Sylvester
booked bands at Adagio for his brother Richard Sylvester and friends. When
Adagio was about to close Bob and Dan discussed the possibility of buying the
business, that did not happen, they kept in contact and after some careful
consideration the Jazz Underground was born.

The Jazz Underground boasts Jazz legends that have graced the stage such
as  Vocalists Giaccomo Gates & Shawnn Monteiro, New York pianist - Hiroshi
Yamazaki, Bassists Bill Crow, Phil Bowler, & Brian Torff, Vibraphonist Jay
Hoggard, Saxophonist Gregg Abate. Upcoming artists scheduled for this
summer and fall include Dave Samuels, Bruce Gertz, Mark Greel, Nando
Micheline, Fernando Huergo, Steve Fell, John Funkhouse, Joel Perry, Donna
“Tulivu” Cumberbatch, Matt Hutchinson, Craig Hartley, Dan Moretti, Jeff Fuller,
Joe Parillo, Richard Sylvester, Bryan Rizutto, Todd Baker, Karen Frisk, Yvonne
Monet, Michel Gauvin, Tony Lombardozzi, Dan Hartman Quintet, Kevin Thornton
Quartet, Rufus Davis & Jim Hunter Duo, Kent Hewitt Trio and  Bill Morrison.

The Jazz Underground hosts private parties and functions and can
accommodate 49 guests. The Jazz Underground Cafe is available for public
events and private parties any time on Sunday or Wednesday and before 5:00
PM Thursday through Saturday.
Every seat in the  intimate club is close to the band and very comfortable,
without that “crowded” feel of the Manhattan jazz clubs.  A state of the art sound
system delivers a perfect, balanced, crystal clear sound that is unsurpassed by
that of any other jazz venue.  If you enjoy listening to music in a comfortable,
friendly, relaxed environment, The Jazz Underground is the place for you.

The Jazz Underground Cafe
New England’s Leading Live Jazz Venue
Plainfield, CT- On June 6, 2010, a rare cold front moved through the regions quiet
corner. Contestants and spectators came from all over to participate in the Hank’s
Dairy Bar first brain freeze competition. Children and adults lined up to take this
frostbitten challenge. Hank’s Dairy Bar’s parking lot began to fill up as registration for
this cool event came to an end.

People of all ages gathered around, with cameras and video recorders to capture
this anticipated event. Owner of Hank’s Dairy Bar Scott Zurowski was the quick witted
emcee of the event, while his lovely wife Claire Zurowski kept up with the scoreboard.
The Zurowski’s beautiful daughter Natalya was in charge of bringing out the
premade soft serve cones. These one pound premade cones were stored in the
freezer for over an hour before the competition began.

The rules were simple: eat the entire one pound ice cream cone as quickly as
possible, trying to avoid a brain freeze. For the adults the grand prize winner receives
$100.00 cash. Second and third place winners receive $25.00 gift certificates to
Hank’s Diary Bar. The children’s grand prize is $50.00 cash. Second and third place
winners receive a $10.00 gift certificate to Hank’s Dairy Bar.

The children quickly taking their place kicked off the competition. Contestants were
called up to an outdoor picnic table in pairs. To clock the time a pair of judges each
marked time with a stop watch. Each child seemed to have their own strategy on how
to eat the colossal cone. With ice cream dripping down their hands, faces and hair
some of the children continuously licked or chewed while others just took as big a
bite as their little mouths would allow.

Next up were the adults eager to take home that grand prize or some of the food
Hank’s is so famous for. Once again adult contestants were called up in pairs. The
adults were fiercely competitive as they wasted no time taking bites even Jaws would
be proud of. Some of the adult competitors clearly got brain freeze, holding their
heads. One man even neglected to remove the paper bottom on the cone and
decided it would be faster to eat the cone paper and all.

The crowd  roared, cheered and even gasped as these brave contestants ate cones
so fast, they broke all the laws of physics. The grand prize winner in the children’s
category was awarded to Jimmy Noel. The second place prize was awarded to
Mateo Gregson and third place went to Madeline Larange. The adult grand prize
winner was Jared Weber taking first place inhaling his cone in an amazing 32.64
seconds. Don’t put the radar gun down just yet, in second place Michael Vose Jr.
came in right behind Weber with a remarkable 36.71 seconds. Third place winner
was Tom Burris.

After all the wet naps and Tylenol were handed out, it was time for “Pete the Human
Floor Tino”. The Human Floor, a gentle giant of a man whose threshold for pain must
be seen to be believed!“Pete the Human Floor Tino” amazed the crowd as he
pounded nails up his nose with a hammer, even having the audience participate.
The crowd grew as The Human Floor broke bricks on his head and walked on glass.
Holding up well under all the pressure and saving the best for last and what he is
known best for “Pete the Human Floor Tino”  had over 23 women participants from
the crowd stand on his entire body, with a combined weight of 2892lbs. The Human
Floor’s performance credits include: The Gong Show, The Tyra Banks Show, HBO
Late Night with Katie Morgan, The Opie & Anthony Virus Tour, The Coney Island
Rockabilly Festival, America's Got Talent.
